a visit with Collin...and a request

I went through a long streak of bad haircuts. Well, they really weren't that bad of haircuts so much that they were not the haircuts that I wanted. The streak ended when we were in Hawaii for my SIL's wedding in November of '05. This woman at a salon there finally gave me a haircut that I both wanted and liked. When I got back home I was determined to find a new stylist who could continue giving me haircuts that I would be happy with. I was lucky enough to find Collin. Today, sadly, he cut my hair for what will most likely be the last time. He has been having health issues and the doctor has advised him to stop styling hair because they think the sprays and whatnot may be to blame. But he has referred me to James, and he believes James will be a good fit for me. Here I am today, with a new cut thanks to Collin.

Now for the request. My birthday is coming up in a few weeks. I am turning 35. Birthdays, for the most part, have been a fun and happy part of life for me. Last year we kept it quiet. I still wasn't up for getting out much or being around people. But this year I feel like I really should do something. I will say that turning 35 is going to be hard for me. That wouldn't be the case if William had lived. But now here I am--childless and with no plan in the near future to try again. That being said, I want to do something fun or exciting, something that I will remember next year. I am asking for suggestions/ideas.

It's hard to find a stylist that fits you. It sounds (and looks) like you had it good in that department for the last little while. Hope James continues the trend.

About the birthday? I'd say scuba diving, but I don't know where you live and how easy that would be to pull off. In some places, they can take you on a one day dive with instructor after a short intro at a pool. If you want to do it for real, you can get certified after a longer dry and wet course. I love it.

A good hike? with an overnight? One year we went hiking on JD's birthday. He was thrilled when we got to the highest elevation point and picnicked with one of those gorgeous views you have to see to believe.

I HATE getting my hair cut! I actually got it cut today. But I never like it. :/

Can't help on the birthday front. I hate it when my birthday comes around. I did have a 'gender bender' for my 21st. Now that was funny.

Love the hairstyle! I hope that you get good styles from James from now on too.

As for your birthday, what did you have in mind? Did you want to do something special solely for yourself, or perhaps Mr C, or did you want something to include your friends and family?

You could plan some fantastic adventure for yourself, such as sky-diving, bungee-jumping, white-water rafting etc.

Or if you want to include the family, you could have some type of themed party. "Tarts n Old farts" or a gender-bender or something like that. Perhaps a costume party with a medieval theme, or a 670's theme etc.

Oh I know - have an overseas holiday to Australia! Can't get more far out than that LOL.

Both you and the haircut look wonderful.

For your birthday, I can only suggest what I would enjoy, because I don't have a very good sense of what would be most meaningful and fun and exciting for you. I like to get myself something that I've really been wanting (whether an object or an experience), but have refused to get or do because it's too expensive or frivolous.

Go surfing. I have a friend who lives in the Pacific Northwest who took it up a while back and I thought it sounded crazy and COLD. Fun though. Or a weekend wine tour? A hiking trip like Julia suggested also sounds fun.

cute haircut! i hate getting my hair cut, b/c it's always a crapshoot. my plan with said hair is to grow it long enough to donate it, while trying to manage the split ends and the dam grays (my hair is black). more than you wanted to know, but there it is.

hmmm for your bday, i suggest something wild and crazy like going to a salsa club. lots of places have a 1 hour class before the club opens, it is so fun and scary and intimidating and definitely memorable. if you were near san francisco i'd meet you for a walk across the golden gate bridge. :)

Thanks for all of the great suggestions for ways to celebrate my birthday. I still haven't decided what I want to do, but I will certainly let you all know (and maybe even post some pictures).

It for sure won't be scuba diving or surfing, even though I am sure they are a lot of fun and certainly sound exciting and memorable. The thing is, I can't swim! I think I will post about this, since it came up before and there is actually a story behind it.

I love the idea of a good hike, so that is on the list of possibilities. I usually do get myself at least one thing that I have been wanting (as Niobe suggested) so I will have to give some thought to what that might be.

Wannabe Mom, if I was in the San Francisco area I would take you up on that offer.

Love the haircut! Hope James can, "keep you satisfied". For the 35 birthday idea... this may sound looney, but how about doing something for others that you have always wanted to do? I know that I always feel best when I help others, yes, better than when I go to the spa. For example, how about volunteering for a week long at the local homeless shelter or maybe doing something like that. Best of all, its FREE. If that doesn't sound interesting, then there is a vacation (like an adventure type) or like others say a smashing party with a band!!! Let us know what you decide!

Okay, I know we live somewhat close to one another so if you want to my hair stylist just email me. I LOVE her!!

Lots of great hiking options around here- so that would be good. What about a fancy night on the town? Theater? Dinner? Does that sort of thing appeal to you?

Have you ever gone to that crazy Teatro Zinzanni? It's completely nuts but very entertaining!
